The 7th Rhode Island Infantry was assigned to the IX Corps and fought at Fredricksburg, Virginia, where William was wounded. The IX Corps was transferred to Kentucky. In a request form General Grant the Regiment was moved to Vicksburg and participated in the Jackson, Mississippi offensive in July 1863; Nathan was wounded slightly in the arm, 13 July 1863in this engagement. The outfit was moved back to Kentucky (Covington) as the Regiment was overwhelmed with typhoid fever.
Nathan died, 22 Aug 1863, in the U.S. Army Hospital at Covington, Kentucky, of wounds and typhoid fever. He was buried at Camp Nelson Nation Cemetery, Nicholasville, Kentucky.
Nathan married Mary Whitford on 20 Feb 1854 in West Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island, United States.
