Marshall Riley Rathbun was the oldest son of George Marshall and Tamar Ann (Garringer) Rathbun. Riley was born in Jay County, Indiana, November 15, 1861. He traveled with his family via a caravan of coveredwagons in which the several Rathbun families moved from Indiana to Missouri, and on to the Moore Prairie area of Chautauqua County, Kansas. At the age of 19 Riley was hauling freight from Independence to Sedan. He later worked on the railroad in Ottawa, Kansas.

On one visit to Rice County, Kansas, Riley met and later married MaryElizabeth "Libby" Kline, who was the fourth of six children in the John W. and Mary Ann (Hile) Kline family. They had migrated from Pennsylvania to Michigan and on to Kansas. Libby was born March 29, 1869, near Three Rivers, Michigan. Riley and Libby were married April 21, 1895.

Riley took his bride to Ottawa, Kansas where they established their home. It was there their first child was born on March 5, 1896, and they named him Orva Edmund. Edmund is a family name handed down throughseveral generations. Their second child, a girl born July 13, 1897, was named Mamie Dell. Two years later, while visiting at the farm house of Grandfather Kline in Rice County, a second son, Elmer Albert, was born on August 13, 1899.

Riley moved his family to Newton, Kansas, where two more children, Ersa Grace, born February 5, 1901, and Roy Irvan, born October 24, 1902,were born. With an increasingly large family Roy decided to move them to the country, so he left the railroad work and became a farmer and dairyman. On a farm near Sterling, in Rice County, Kansas, their sixth child was born June 5, 1906. She was a rather frail, little girl and they named her Bernice Ruth.

Some years later the owner of the farm, where the family lived, persuaded Riley to move his ro his ranch near Hutchinson as foreman. Libbybecame manager of the workmen's boarding house. After several years Riley was injured while discarding some old equipment and developed blood poisioning. He died within the week on February 7, 1917. Riley'sbrothers and other relatives of Sedan came for his funeral and helpedLibbie with arrangements and plans for the future. They though the family sould move to Sedan where the boys would have better opportunities for work. Therefore Libby and her children moved to Sedan and fromthen on considered Sedan their "home town". Libby died December 19, 1944, and was buried beside Riley in the Kline section of the Alden, Kansas, Cemetery.
