  General Notes:

The Post Register, 1970. From one room to Gale, Teacher recalls memories.

A one-room, one-teacher rural school "where I was not only teacher, but janitor and fire-builder and tender," is something Mrs. Norma Rathbun will remember about her first teaching job in 1929.

June 6 of this year will mark the 41st year of full time teaching forMrs. Rathbun, who will retire at the end of this term from Clair E. Gale Junior High School.

She remembers that she was lucky in those days of the '20's for the job paid $75 a month in a check that was cased at face value and not ata discount as many were in those depression days.

Having only two years of schooling behind her at the time, Mrs. Rathbun attended summer school and then went back to college to get a bachelors degree in 1932.

"After one more year of rural school teaching, I had the unbelievableluck to be hired as a high school teacher at Ashton, S.D., for all of$1,000 a year," she said.

In 1943, she was married to John F. Rathbun and the couple moved to Idaho Falls where, for the first time since she was 5 years old, she did not attend school for the winter, either as student or teacher.

In 1946 she began teaching English, history, speech and drama at IonaHigh School. "One of my students there was Norm Stanger, with whom Ihave taught at Gale for years and who will replace me next year as eighth grade history teacher," she said.

She taught at Bonneville High School when it was created. One of herstudents there was Steve Holtom, now Eagle Rock Junior High School principal, and another, Harry Groom, is a school psychologist with IdahoFalls School District 91.

Mrs. Rathbun said she and her husband will probably make some short trips "in our own neighborhood" to see some of Idaho's historical spots.

Her Husband will retire this fall after which the two have made no definite plans.
